A reproductive endocrinologist (RE) is a sub-specialist doctor who is dedicated to the treatment of infertility. An RE has gone through advanced training to understand male and female hormones, the causes of infertility, and the latest infertility treatments. An RE is capable of handling very complex infertility cases.

Family doctors or gynaecologists often begin the process of investigating the causes of infertility. A referral to a reproductive endocrinologist may be made when test results or a lack of success with initial treatments suggests the need for more advanced methods.

Like a gynaecologist, an RE has completed medical school and residency. In addition, the RE goes through several additional years of training in the field of reproductive medicine.
